Madelaine Mathieu

Architect and interior designer. Founder of Otium Society.

Madelaine has worked across more than a decade of projects, from urban planning and large-scale architecture in Buenos Aires to private homes in Perth. She has been student, teacher, collaborator and co-founder along the way, and that range shows in how she works: comfortable leading a project, just as comfortable being one of the team.

Her love of design started at home, in Argentina, around her family’s hotel. There she learned that a space is only as good as the way it looks after the people in it, and that the details guests never mention are the ones they feel most.

Interiors, photography, art, flowers and fashion all feed the way she sees a room. She is easy to talk to, quick to understand what a client actually needs, and brings a holistic eye and close attention to detail to every project.

01 — The name.

Why “Otium”

In Latin, otium is the time you keep for yourself: rest, reading, conversation, the things that make a life rather than a living.

Otium Society designs homes for that time, and finds the objects that belong in them.
